A spring sowing list for small beds

What to sow in September and October if you only have one bed.

Seedlings with their first leaves in a black plastic tray

A single household bed can’t grow everything, so spring is about choosing. Here is one way to fill a bed of about two and a half metres by one.

  • Two tomato plants at the back, staked.
  • A row of climbing beans on the north end, so they don’t shade anything.
  • Lettuce and beetroot in short rows, sown every few weeks.
  • Basil tucked in around the tomatoes.
  • A calendula or two for the bees.

Check the sowing guide on the seed library page for the month-by-month version.
